ACS Georgia Research Symposium

The third ACS Georgia Research Symposium was held at the Kennesaw State University KSU Center on October 26, 2019. This symposium was a great example of “elements of collaboration” and reached a vast range of people including senior chemists and high school to graduate school students from all across the metro Atlanta area. Twenty-eight students from ten institutions presented their research in a poster session. The local section also recognized those who have been 50 or 60 year members of ACS, ACS Georgia Chemistry Olympiad finalists, and Project SEED mentors. The inter-generational interactions between the senior chemists and students was the greatest success of the day. Awards for best poster presentations were won by the following students:

  • First Place: Tamilore Dairo (Georgia Gwinnett College), “Synthesis and Gelation Studies of Anthraquionyl Alkanamides as Low Molecular Mass Gelators”
  • Second Place: Azza Habel (Clark Atlanta University), “Hairy Nanoparticles with Polystyrene Cores and Poly(2-hydroxyethylemethacrylate) Hairs”
  • Third Place: Zeljka Zec (Kennesaw State University), “Investigating Cathode Dissolution by Homogeneous Sol-gel Coating on Manganese Dioxide Nanofibers to Extend Battery Performance”
