Winter 2024 Updates: Leadership, Event, and Award Announcements

Dear Georgia ACS Members,

As we advance into 2024, we’re delighted to present updates and opportunities for you to get involved with your local chemistry community. If you have questions, ideas, or events to share with the local section, please reach out!

Newly elected leaders for 2024:

We warmly welcome our newly elected officers for this year:

  • Chair Elect: Dr. Cora MacBeth, Emory University
  • Member-at-Large: Dr. Vicky Mody, Philadelphia College of Medicine (Suwanee, GA)
  • Treasurer: Dr. Ajay Mallia, Georgia Gwinnett College
  • Councilor: Holly Davis, Abbott

Additionally, Cheryl Trusty has been appointed to the vacant secretary position. This appointment was approved by the Executive Committee at our first quarterly business meeting of 2024.

Gwinnett Regional Science and Engineering Fair: Feb. 23

Contribute your expertise as a judge at the fair on February 23rd, where the ACS Georgia Local Section will also present a special prize in chemistry. For volunteering details, visit the Gwinnett Regional Science Fair website. Sign up to be a judge and join others from the Local Section in celebrating the chemists of tomorrow.

ATL Science Festival: March 23

Engage with the community at Piedmont Park during the ATL Science Festival on March 23rd, from 8 AM to 4 PM. Interested volunteers can reach out to tkinner@acsga.org. Shifts are available and training will be provided.

Project SEED: Summer 2024

This summer, we look forward to participating in Project SEED, providing research opportunities to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. For mentoring opportunities, email Dr. Ajay Mallia at amallia@ggc.edu.

SERMACS 2024: October 23-26

We are honored to host the 75th SERMACS from October 23-26, 2024. This year’s theme is, “Advancing and Transforming Lives through Chemistry”. Stay informed by visiting SERMACS 2024.

Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW): April 21-27

Join us from April 21-27 for CCEW and consider leading a community event. This year’s theme is “Get a Charge out of Chemistry!”. The section offers funding support for these initiatives.
